It is an intentio animae (that is, a natural sign, itself signified by a conventianal sign, like a word), which is one sign pointing to a multitude of things, precisely as St Thomas expounds it by his example of the statue which is representative for many ( De Ente et Essentia, Cap.III, line 113).
