A lattice is a periodic arrangement of geometrical points (describing the actual periodic structure of a real pattern). So we would be persuaded to consider such a point as the smallest repeating unit. In itself this is correct, but a unit cell means the smallest repeating unit having the same dimensionality as the whole lattice.
